Will Pin Box of 1999 Thor Wanderer 5th Wheel Clear Bed Rail of 2009 F150 Using M5 Series # RP30928
Question:
I own a Ford F-150 can a M5 Series 30928 fit inside a 8ft bed and still clear the sides. Hooking up to a 1999 Thor Wanderer 5th wheel.

The M5 Series # RP30928 is height adjustable from 14-18 inches. The mounting rails for the hitch would add anywhere from 1-1/8 to 1-7/8 inches to the hitch height. According to my research, the height of your bed rails is 22.4 inches above the floor of the bed which means there's going to be an about 4 inch difference in height between your bed side and the skid plate on the fifth wheel.
Whether or not this will be an issue will depend on the design of the pin box on your fifth wheel. If the pin box is angled down from the turrret with a small contact surface to the hitch skid plate, then you should have no problem at all. However if your pin box isn't angled and has a long contact surface with the skid plate, you might be in danger of the pin box striking the bed side during turns. (See diagram).
If you have a long pin box, using a Sidewinder replacement pin box is the answer. The sidewinder changes the pivot point from the junction of the king pin and the hitch jaws to a point 22 inches rearward, where the pin box attaches to the fifth wheel. Because the long portion of the pin box doesn't rotate, there's no danger of it striking the bed sides. The Sidewinder model you would need will depend on the manufacturer and model number of your existing pin box. For more information, see the Sidewinder help article I've linked.
