Creating a Hot Lead from RV to Towed-Trailer Battery

Question:

Is it correct to connect a 12 gauge wire from the RV positive battery post directly to the RV side of a six way connector to feed the trailer battery and keep it charged when traveling. If so should there be a fuse in this line and what is recommended? Would it also be wize to place a fuse in the trailer side of the connector wire feeding the trailer battery. Thanks much for guidance.

Expert Reply:

You should use 10 gauge wire, item # 10-1-1, and a 40 amp inline circuit breaker, item # PK54540, to install the hot wire in the 6-way connector at the rear of your RV. Using a fuse on the trailer side while not required, would protect your RV form any problems associated with this wire or the battery on the trailer side.
