Comparing AirLift # AL88295 And Firestone # F2299 Air Bag Suspensions for 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4
Question:
I have a 2006 Dodge 4WD, 2500, I pull a bumper pull trailer. Which air bag suspension is better? Air Lift Veh Suspension AL8829510 vs Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs-Double Convoluted F2299? The Firestone has half the parts and appears to be a simpler installation. Maybe Firestone has better availability for replacement parts? Help me decide. Thanks

If I personally had to choose between the AirLift # AL88295 and the Firestone # F2299, I'd choose the AirLIft system which includes internal jounce bumpers that provide extra cushion if you're running low pressure in the bags but should hit a pothole or other obstacle or if the bags should fail for some reason. Over the years, I've found AirLift's customer service and support to be absolutely outstanding, and obtaining spare parts when needed will not present a problem.
All this being said, keep in mind that an air bag system is primarily designed to carry weight carried in the vehicle itself, and not so much to counteract tongue weight applied to the vehicle by a trailer.
To counteract the squat experienced when a trailer is hitched, a weight distribution system would work much better. A weight distribution (W/D) system would use spring bars to apply leverage back to the trailer hitch, placing a portion of the trailer's tongue weight onto the front vehicle axle, which will level the tow vehicle's ride height.
To choose the correct w/d system for you, I'd need to know the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer, as well as the weight of anything typically stowed in the truck bed behind the rear axle. Knowing the length and type of trailer would be helpful as well. I'll link you to our article that explains weight distribution in more detail, as well as to an article that explains how to determine your trailer tongue weight.
If you'd care to reply with the information, I'd be happy to make some recommendations for you.
