Does Pilot Hole Matter When Changing Wheel Size On Trailer

Question:

I am considering upgrading from 8 tire and wheel to a 12 inch tire and wheel. Current configuration is 4.80/4 on 8inch x 3 3/4 .....4 on 4. The upgrade that is being considered is 4.80 - 12 on 12 x 4 rim ....4 on 4. My concern and question is will the larger diameter pilot hole effect proper installation ? It is a 2000 lb axle. I will be upgrading the springs using part # WIH4 to accommodate the extra load capacity.

If you are changing the wheels from 8 inch to 12 inch and have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, and If the wheel is stud-piloted, then the pilot hole hole does not matter. However, if the wheel is centered using the pilot hole, then you will need to find a wheel with the same size. Check the holes for the bolts or studs. If they are beveled then the wheel is stud piloted. The lug nut should have a matching bevel.

I have attached a link to our product page for 12 inch tire/wheel combos with 4 on 4 bolt patterns you can check out.

You will want to make sure you do not exceed the weight capacity of the trailer. you will always want to make sure you do not exceed the lowest rated capacity of any of the components when towing.
