Advanced trailer brake controllers like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 offer better flexibility in the choice of mounting location because they can be installed in any vertical orientation so long as the unit remains pointed in the direction of travel and is level in the horizontal plane. The linked drawing shows how the unit must be oriented in order for its internal accelerometer to function properly.
The P3 can be rotated to any point in a 360-degree vertical circle as long as it remains conveniently within sight and reach for emergency situations. This unit comes with two types of mounting brackets for flexibility.
You just need to make sure that the trim panel where you choose to mount the unit has nothing delicate directly behind it that could be damaged when you drill holes.
