What is the Best Setting for a Tekonsha P3 Trailer Brake Controller for a 1200kg (2640 lbs) Trailer  

Question:

I have a Mazda BT50 2009 3litre diesel engine, I also tow a pop-top caravan which weighs with load approx. 1200kgs, which setting would suit, I live in Australia.

For a trailer weighing 1200kg (2640 pounds) you would most likely only need boost setting 1 if at all when using the P3, # 90195. But before setting the boost you will need to set the gain properly on the P3. To do this, follow these steps:

First take the trailer to a level area with space like an empty parking lot. Set the brake controller output to 6. Then tow the trailer at about 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour) and fully apply the manual override on the brake controller.

If the trailer brakes lock up then adjust the power down and do the test again.

If the brakes do not brake enough, adjust the power up. You want to get it set to a point just below wheel lock up. After you have the setting jsut right you can choose the boost level you may need.
