How to Install a Battery Charge Line for a Flat Towed Vehicle with 4-Way Connector

Question:

I have a 4-pin round connector on my towed Jeep. I would like to use the existing wires and add a charging circuit. I assume that would take me to a 6-pin connector. Do you have a kit that would let me use my existing 4-wire installation and add a charging circuit? I have a 7-to-4 cable that came with the motorhome we bought but the Jeep we bought has the 4-pin connector installed.

I have a way to use the existing 4-way wiring but you are correct it does involve changing to a 6-pin on your Jeep. In order to add a charge line to your setup the best solution will be to use the Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit item # RM-146-7. This kit includes a 6-Way round connector that you will install on your Jeep. You would just need to cut off the existing 4-Way connector and connect the wires to the 6-Way. You won't be able to use your 7 to 4 cable with this set up so the kit is the best way to go. It also comes with a bracket that'll make installing the 6-way easier and cleaner.

I have attached an image from the instructions manual to help you get it set up. Just be sure to match the wires up by function using a circuit tester like item # PTW2993.

With the 6-Way in place on your Jeep you can use the included adapter cord to connect it with the 7-Way on the RV. The center pin on the 6-Way is wired for 12V power so you can then use the Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit item # RM-156-25, you were looking at, to allow up to 15 amps from the RV's battery to be used to maintain the charge on the battery in your Jeep.
