Idler Hub To Replace Drum Brakes On Tandem Axle Trailer With 3,500LB Axles

Question:

I have a trailer with tandem 3500lbs axles. Both have breaks. My question is can I remove the brake assembly from one axle and add idler hub assembly, and if I can do I use just a regular replacement or do I need a special hub?

Expert Reply:

First you will need to check with the local laws where you plan on using the trailer as some areas require both axles on a tandem trailer to have brakes. If you can operate with brakes only on one axle then you can switch to an idler hub assembly but be sure to match your correct bolt pattern.
