Troubleshooting Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Failing and Brakes Not Applying Pressure

Question:

I Bought a Dexter E/H1000 a number of years ago for my duel axle construction trailer. Seemed to work fine for years. Didnt use it much maybe 1000miles over 10 years.. Then under heavy breaking when the trailer brakes were working hard they just failed. I almost crashed. Now under even moderate breaking they will just all of a sudden fail. If I keep my setting at about 4 out of 10 they will work, but dont stop me very good. Any thoughts on what might be going on? Thanks in advance.

I would start by checking the condition and level of the brake fluid. I typically recommend flushing and replacing the brake fluid on these types of units every year no matter how much the trailers are used. Brake fluid can absorb moisture which will then cause the brakes to fail like you are experiencing since the moisture can be compressed and does not hold pressure like just brake fluid. Also if the fluid is low this may mean you have a leak somewhere and will want to check the brake lines and calipers for any places where brake fluid may be leaking.

If you have no leaks and the brake fluid is new and without moisture the actuator will need to be replaced or serviced. There are gaskets for the actuator which should prevent fluid from flowing back into the reservoir when the brakes are activated. If this gets damaged it can cause the brake pressure to drop as well. We do have the Actuator # K71-650 if you wish to replace it and not risk another failure as well.
