What Info is Needed to Pick Out Replacement Brake Assemblies for Trailer
Question:
Hello! I have a 2003 Cargo Mate 14 Trailer that I would like to replace the brakes. They are electric brakes and functional, just old and warn out. I plan to re-grease and inspect the hub, but did not have an idea how to determine aftermarket brake compatibility. This is my first time doing trailer brakes, so wasnt sure if there are parts specific to CargoMate or if you could get a universal based on a wheel size. If you guys sell brake kits for this application, I would consider buying. thanks for time!

Brake assemblies are pretty easy to pick out replacements for since the different brands are all basically universal designed. So what that means is you would want to know the axle capacity and/or the diameter and width of the brake drum and that would be all that you need. Another way to get axle capacity is to measure the diameter of it. Or it will be listed on a sticker on the axle.
It's very likely that your 2003 Cargo Mate trailer has 3,500 lb axles and the correct assembly set you would need is the part # AKEBRK-35-SA. These are 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch. A 3,500 lb axle has a 2-3/8 inch diameter.
