Troubleshooting No Power to Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller After Installation

Question:

I installed this on a 2020 ford transit 350 with no factory wiring after installing the 4 way and 7 way RV. The unit has never displayed any lights. I finally have my travel trailer plugged into the 7 way and the unit still doesn’t light up and the bottom of it feels hot. Trying to understand it. Thanks

I'm assuming you have pressed the brake pedal or used the manual override on your Curt Venture which should activate the lights on the display. If not, that is likely the problem. Otherwise, it sounds like it may not have power, or at least not power on the black wire. The fact that it is heating up makes it sound like it is getting power of some kind but not the way it should.

I would double check the wiring. The blue wire is your brake output, the black wire should be the battery power, red is the stoplight switch, and white is the ground. If you flipped the white and black wire the brake controller might have sustained damage. You may also want to test the wiring with a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to make sure everything checks out, especially since you just installed the # ETBC7.
