Troubleshooting Wiring On Trailer And 2013 Ford Explorer With No Factory Tow Package
Question:
I installed this to my 2013 explorer. All trailer lights turn on except left brake light. When I push the brake nothing gets brighter and turn signal doesnt work at all. Would not having a factory tow package cause this?

If you are only having problems with one light, you can check to see if you have a ground problem on your trailer that is hooked up to your 2013 Ford Explorer. You want to make sure that the ground wire (usually white) on the trailer connector is securely attached to the trailer frame. If you have a folding trailer tongue, attach the ground connection to the trailer frame, behind the tongue hinge. Check the ground area for any corrosion or paint, or dirt build up. If any is present, clean the area until bare metal is visible. Move the ground wire to the trailer frame if it is attached to any aluminum section of the trailer body. Each component on the trailer should have its own ground. I have attached a link to troubleshooting wiring on a trailer. I have also included a drawing that may help.
I recommend testing the 4-way connector on the vehicle with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. I have included If you are getting the signal, then move to the trailer. Use a 12V power source and test each pin on the trailer connector with the circuit tester. If the lights all work with the direct power hooked up I the issue is that you need a harness with a powered converter.
I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # C56093. This system simply plugs into the existing wiring in the rear cargo area. You run a hot lead to the vehicle battery with this system. This harness comes with a powered converter and a 4-way flat connector. I have included a link to an installation video of this harness on a 2013 Ford Explorer.
When searching the fitguide for your 2013 Ford Explorer with no factory tow package, all of the recommended harnesses have a powered converter. This converter is needed because the vehicle brake and turn signals are sent through separate wires, and the converter provides enough power for the trailer lights and helps protect the vehicle and the trailer wiring. Per our fitguide, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118540 you referenced is designed to fit Ford Explorers that have a factory tow package.
