Can 7" Hydraulic Brakes Be Replaced With Electric Brakes?

Question:

I have a trailer with 7inch hydraulic brakes. I want to replace them with electric brakes. The brake mounting pattern is 2 3/4 X 3. Can I get electric brakes that will fit my current hole pattern? Could the mounting on the electric brakes be altered to fit?

Expert Reply:

The Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-2 is designed to fit a Flange # 4-34 which spaces the mounting holes 2-7/8" on center. As these are within 1/8" of the dimensions you listed I recommend rechecking the measurements for verification. I do not recommend drilling out the holes to increase the size as this could weaken the flange and cause another issues. Instead if your holes are a different pattern you can replace your flanges for the correct size flange.

I recommend using new Mounting Hardware # BRKH7 for the brakes and if you can let me know what size spindle and bolt pattern your wheels have I can help you find new drums so you will not have any wear issues with the different width pads.
