Recommended 1-Bike Bike Rack For The Most Tailgate Clearance

Question:

I want to use the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Rack for 1 Bike - 1-1/4 on my 2020 toyota sienna. My hitch is 1 1/4. I have a basic bike Cannondale Adventure 1 30 lbs I need a light rack. Couple of questions: 1. Of the 1 bike racks, will the Kuat give me the most tilt? 2. Can you change the direction of how the bike is mounted? I have a mirror on the left side, which will interfere with opening the tailgate. 3. If I need to get a hitch extender, will a 7 or 10 give me enough room to have the tailgate clear the bike handlebars. I saw a toyota sienna on one of your videos so I thought you had access to one to try out. I looked at 2 bike racks, thinking I could put my bike on the outside, but they are pretty heavy.

Each of the 1-bike racks that currently offer are going to give you about a 45 degree tilt, but there the RockyMounts HighNoon FC Solo Bike Rack for 1 Bike # RKY87RR is going to sit the furthest away with a 16-3/4" distance from the closest part of the rack to the hitch pin hole of your trailer hitch.

1-Bike racks, like both the # RKY87RR and Kuat Transfer V2 # KU64FR you referenced, will have you place the bike so that the front wheel sits in the cradle to the right side of the vehicle so you could possibly run into interference issues with your mirror.

We get cars in routinely for installs and that allows us to test out other products, like the bike rack videos you referenced, but we don't typically have every vehicle available to test on demand. It would honestly be best to get a bike rack and measure for the correct hitch extender, if one is even needed. Hitch extenders will reduce the capacity of the trailer hitch by 50% so I typically try to avoid them unless absolutely necessary. With you having a 1-1/4" hitch it's most likely only rated for 200lbs, which would leave you with only 100lbs of capacity.

If you buy a two bike rack the proper loading process would be to always load your bikes starting with the inner cradles and working your way outwards to properly distribute the weight. Placing the bike on the outer cradle with a 2-bike rack would put a lot of leverage further out and can cause issues.
