Are Crossbars Needed To Mount The Thule Caprock Platform Roof Tray

I have a 2022 Outback Wilderness. Id like to use this platform. The page seems to indicate that crossbars arent necessary...is that correct? What would I use to attach to the existing rails on my roof if I dont need the crossbars?
