Trailer Hitch for 2023 Kia Sportage EV

Question:

Do you have a Curt trailer hitch for a 2023 Kia Sportage Sportage EV? I noticed the 2023 has three places for bolts on each side rather than for four that it shows in the video for an earlier model.

We do offer a Curt Class III hitch for the 2023 Kia Sportage.

We offer the Curt 13485 as part # C94WR. According to Curt, the hitch fits all models of the 2023 Sportage, including the EV.

Per the linked install instructions, the hitch attaches to the frame members, using six M10 x 1.25 -35mm Class 10.9 bolts, four from the sides and two from the underside. The 2023 Sportage is the first model year of the 5th generation, so this would explain the differences in the number of attachment points.

The linked video shows the hitch being installed on a Hyundai Tucson, but the install process would be the same.

Mike, all hitch offerings for current model Kia Sportage state the hitch is not approved for use with a weight distributing hitch. However, I currently use a weight-distributing hitch for my 3,000 camping trailer. Can you explain why this hitch should not be used with a weight-distributing hitch system? Thanks so much.

Hi Gregg, It's not the hitch itself that is the issue, it's the part of the vehicle that the hitch attaches to. A weight distribution kit applies a large amount of force to the trailer/vehicle connection. The fear is that this extra force could cause the hitch attachment points on the vehicle to fail. We do have some alternatives for you, though. If you're using the weight distribution system to reduce the sag caused by the trailer's tongue weight, a product like the Coil SumoSprings, part # CSS-1125R will help to eliminate that. For trailer sway, you can use a friction sway control unit like # 83660. You'll also need a sway control ball bracket like # RP26003. Hope that helps!
