All Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2021 Chevy Traverse
Question:
Hi there, I was hoping you could help me know what all I’d need to flat tow our 2021 Chevy Traverse from our 2023 Thor Challenger 37DS. Re: Braking systems it looks like mechanical braking is easier to operate day-to-day but requires more installation steps? Thanks for any insights or guidance. We’ve been RVing for a couple years, first time looking to flat tow!

We can get your 2021 Chevy Traverse set up to be flat towed, and I'll go ahead and list out all the parts you need below. As far as the braking system, the fixed system does require more install steps than a portable system, but is a huge time saver overall. You won't have to set up a fixed system every single time you tow, you can just connect and head out, so that's definitely the option I recommend, along with the following:
- Base Plate Kit: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-523200-5
- Tow Bar: Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522
- Roadmaster 64" Single Hook, Straight Safety Cables # RM-645
- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Wiring Kit # RM-152-98146-7
- Roadmaster Battery Disconnect With Switch # RM-766
- Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751483
- Supplemental Braking System: Roadmaster InvisiBrake Supplemental Braking System # RM-8700
The Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plates are great because they have removable tabs which means your Equinox is going to maintain its clean aesthetic when you aren't flat towing it. The Falcon tow bar is not only high-quality and easy to use, it has guides for the wiring and safety cables to keep them off the ground, and an exceptionally long 53-1/2" reach which allows your Chevy to track and maneuver behind your motorhome better than other bars with shorter arms.
The wiring is a diode kit which will prevent any type of electrical feedback to keep your Chevy's electrical system safe, while the stop light switch is needed to ensure a working brake signal, and since your Equinox needs to disconnect the battery, you'll also have to have the battery disconnect switch. As for the braking system, the InvisiBrake is great because it allows you to set the exact braking power you want, provides a trickle charge to your Equinox's battery, and has a monitor you put in your motorhome which lights up when the brakes are on, so you always know when the brakes are being activated.
Finally, to protect your Equinox from rocks and other debris hitting it while you are flat towing, I highly recommend considering a rock guard, the Roadmaster Tow Defender Protective Screening # RM-4750.
