Parts Needed to Tow 1974 Ford Bronco with 1995 Bronco That Has No Hitch or Trailer Wiring

Question:

I have a 95 Bronco that came with a factory tow package but the previous owner has taken the hitch off and disconnected the pig tail at the back. I also have a 74 Bronco that will be pulled with the 95. Will this brake controller and connector hookup with the factory plug on the vehicle? Ill be pulling around 6000 to 6500 lbs so recommend what I would need to do this safely. Hitch, connections and all.

If you are thinking of flat-towing, an electric trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 cannot be used for your application since your towed vehicle does not have electric brakes. Also, another complication is that we do not offer any tow bar base plates for the 1974 Ford Bronco; you would have to have base plates custom fabricated, which could be potentially very costly. I have linked an article that provides a lot of important information on the requirements for flat towing that you might want to review if this is your intention.

If you have a trailer with electric brakes for hauling the 74 Bronco, we do offer several different 2-inch hitch receivers for the 1995 Bronco; all can be seen on the link provided. Based on your stated 6500-lb towing requirement you will be best served by Curt Class IV hitch # 14001 that offers a 10,000-lb capacity. This will fit your Bronco as long as it does not have a roll pan bumper. Drilling is required for installation and it may also be necessary to loosen and reposition both the bumper and spare tire for hitch installation. For this type of trailer application the Prodigy P2 and wiring harness # 3035-P are suitable.

For wiring we offer a plug-in harness for the 1995 Bronco, part # C55350. This provides a 4-pole flat connector for lighting functions. You will also need a brake controller installation kit, either # ETBC7 (for a trailer with a 7-way) or # ETBC6 (for a 6-way trailer connector). I have linked an article that covers the process of trailer brake controller installation as well as a video showing installation of an ETBC7 in a 1996 Explorer.

Another option to consider if you do not have a trailer is a tow dolly, such as Roadmaster # RM-2050-1. This comes complete with lighting and trailer brakes that can operated by the P2. You will still want to check your Bronco manual (or local dealership) to see if rear-wheels-down towing is permissible for the 1974 Bronco.
