Tires for 2006 Continental JB157-700 Trailer for Long Trip

Question:

I have a 2006 Continental trailer model JB157-700. I use it to trailer a 16ft Carolina Skiff with a 25 hp outboard. I’d like to trailer this boat on the interstate for a trip to the Florida keys which is about a 7 hour trip. It had a 4 lug pattern and size 4.80-12 tires. Do I need larger tires and wheels for trips like this? If so, do you have a recommendation? Could I switch out the hubs if necessary? Thanks.

There is nothing wrong with using 4.80-12 tires on your 2006 Continental trailer. However, these are more than likely bias ply tires with a 65 mph speed rating. If that is the case, I recommend upgrading to the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire # TT48012C.

Radial tires have better performance on the highway, and in general, when compared to bias ply tires. These also have a speed rating of M for 81 mph. By keeping the same tire size and switching to radial tires you won't have to purchase new wheels. This also means you won't have to worry about measuring for clearance. More than likely you would have to remove your fenders to use a larger tire and wheel since the trailer was designed to have enough clearance for your 4.80-12 tires.
