Here's how you'll know if the tailgate of your 1987 Toyota 4Runner will clear above the top of the Kuat Pivot Adapter part # PVP20B. Measure from the center of your hitch pin hole up 5-3/16 inches. If there's nothing in that area that would interfere this would fit and work great.
