Why Does Trailer Wiring of 2022 Toyota Tacoma Require Running to Truck Battery
Question:
I want to install a powered 4-pin trailer wiring harness in my 2022 2.7liter that did not come with the tow package from the factory. Ive already installed the hitch, and am looking into which 4-pin wiring harness I should install and where to get the power from. It seems like they are all powered to a 12v source and the most common place is of course the battery itself. But thats a long way to run the wiring and considering trailer lights are very low load since LED lights are used now, Im wondering if there is power available somewhere in the rear of the truck. Can a 12v source besides the battery or fuse block to power a harness?

When installing the Tekonsha trailer wiring harness part # 118685 on your 2022 Toyota Tacoma you do need to run the power wire up to the battery of the truck. This prevents the risk of any trailer wiring shorts from harming the vehicle wiring instead since the draw would be straight to the battery. If you don't run the wire to the battery you would be bypassing this form of circuit protection.
