Reason for Metal Ring Inside the Stainless Steel Seal Ring on Spindle Grease Seal Set

Question:

In the photos of this product it shows a snap ring or circlip that resides in the sleeve. Ive yet to find a clarification on the snap ring / circlips purpose. The instructions are very vague. I found a set of instructions that states to torque the spindle nut to 20 foot pounds then back it off. Im assuming the torqueing compresses the seal ring on to create a tight fit. Does this sound correct? However I fear torqueing to 20 foot pounds will put stress on the tapered roller bearings. Please advise if you can.

According to Bearing Buddy, the purpose of the metal ring inside the stainless steel seal ring on the # BB60005 is to add additional support. Because the seal ring is so thin in this kit, they added a support ring that goes in the back side of the seal ring so it doesn’t collapse. The support ring is required. Regarding the instructions for the Spindle Grease Seal Set, it calls for 20 inch pounds of torque, not foot pounds.
