Does Curt Brake Controller Wiring Circuit Tester # C51498 Show Amperage Draw at Brake Assemblies

Question:

Does the tester measure the total current being feed to all 6 brakes the spec sheet shows with 6 brakes it should read 24 amps with a 12 volt source? If the engine is running the voltage applied could be 13.8 volts. Does it read the voltage being applied to all 6 brakes? With the engine running it could be as high as 13.8 volts will it show the output to the trailer brakes with the engine running ? With higher battery voltage the output will also go up because the brake resistance will not change. This means the current feed to the brakes will also be higher than 24 amps. With all 6 brakes in parallel, across the 13.8 volts, the brake resistance should be .5 ohms. with a brake current reading of 29 amps for max stop effort. Will this tester show all of these parameters ?

Expert Reply:

Since the Curt Brake Controller Wiring Circuit Tester # C51498 plugs into the vehicle side 7-way when it is disconnected from the tow vehicle it would not have ability to show any amperage draw on the individual brake assemblies. It can only show you how much amperage your brake controller is capacity of putting out at the connector at the rear of the vehicle.
