How To Replace The Load Lifter Hinge On A Thule Atlantis 1800

Question:

Ok, one of the two points that holds the top to the bottom section of my Atlantis 1800 popped off. Couldn’t reattach, thus ordered replacements hinges. Now the issue is removing the existing hinge without damaging the carrier. That, plus how in the world do you install the new hinges? This is no easy task, or I’m missing something with the removal and replacement of the hinge. Is there a ‘special tool’ required to accomplish this simple task. I’m lost! Your assistance is appreciated

There is not a special tool that is needed to install the Replacement Lid Lifter Hinge for Thule Cargo Boxes # TH14936, however you're right it can be a bit tricky.

What you're going to want to do is, with a set of needle nose pliers you'll want to grab the neck of the ball joint inside your cargo box and begin working the socket off the ball by wiggling the pliers towards the socket until it pops off (shown below).

After the top socket is popped off, easily pop the bottom socket off by pushing the hinge away from the ball joint.

After the hinge is off, you'll just need to connect the new hinge by snapping it onto the ball joints. This part can be difficult, so I recommend using a a set of vise grips to fully seat the socket to the ball joint.

I have also attached a video demonstrating this entire process, you can skip to the 1:00 minute mark to get to the first part.
