Options to Carry 2-Bikes When Towing a Camper With a Toyota Rav4

Question:

I have a question about the dual 2 hitch. I bought a camper that is 1530 # dry weight and a tong weight of about 138#. I drive a RAV4 Adventure model with tow capacity of 3500# and tongue weight of 325#. I would like to be able to put my bike rack and 2 bikes above camper hitch with this dual hitch. My bike rack is a 2 bike Sherpa 32# and both bikes together wouldnt weigh more than 70# at very most. Based on all this information do you think the dual 2 hitch is a safe option? I was looking at purchasing the Malone 2 dual you have available. Thank you for your guidance.

I have a couple different options for you to take a look at. But unfortunately, using a dual hitch receiver like the Malone 2" Dual Purpose Hitch Receiver # MPG544 is not going to work for what you need. This is because using the Malone 2" Dual Purpose Hitch Receiver # MPG544 will reduce your tongue weight capacity by 50% which will not allow you enough capacity to even tow your camper.

If your camper has a 4" - 4-1/2" square continuously welded steel bumper, you can use the Swagman Around the Spare Deluxe 2 Bike Rack for RV Bumpers # S80501.

You could also look into adding a hitch to your camper if it does not already have one. I have included an option below depending on the width of your frame.

If your trailer frame is 18" to 51" Wide
- Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs # C13702

If your trailer frame is 22" to 72" Wide
- Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs # 13703

Unfortunately, the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Bike Rack # SH22P is not rated for use on a camper. You would need to get a bike rack rated for trailer use, like the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # KU84FR.

You could also think about putting the bikes inside the camper for travel and pulling them out when you get to your camp site.
