How Does Lock of Yakima FullBack 2 Work When Carrying a Single Bike

Question:

The cable for the lock which is already installed on the bike rack isn’t long enough to lock onto the one bike on the rack closest to the car when using the rack for only one bike it was recommended to position the bike closest to the car. Is there a longer cable or am I doing something incorrectly? Seems useless to have a locking cable that isn’t long enough to lock the bike. Also, with my 2018 Prius, the trunk security strap won’t fit through the hatchback. Can I put it somewhere else?

This is a really good question, and honestly I would say it's borderline a design flaw or at least a feature of the Yakima Fullback 2 part # Y02634 that wasn't thought out all the way.

If carrying a single bike with the Yakima Fullback 2 part # Y02634 it is recommended to carry it on the closer set of frame mounts to the vehicle so that the bike puts the least amount of leverage on the rack. BUT like you noticed the locking cable is only long enough to lock a bike in the further out position. So this leaves you with two options. You can move the bike out when you park so that it can be locked and then move it back in when driving. Or you can just mount the bike on the outer mounts and ignore the recommendation. Since the rack is rated for carrying two bikes there's no reason it couldn't handle a single bike in the outer position so this is probably what I would do so that the lock can be utilized.

Could you fit the security strap through the side of the hatch instead of over the top of it?
