Can 2006 Jeep Wrangler Use Tow Dolly or Does it Have to be Flat Towed Behind Motorhome

Question:

I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler with an automatic transmission. Is it possible to tow this vehicle behind an RV using a tow dolly, and if so, what is the procedure? Id like to avoid the expense of installing a flat tow system and I like the ability to tow different vehicles using a tow dolly. Please advise. Thank you.

I took a look at the online owner's manual of a 2006 Jeep Wrangler and it states on page 248 that a dolly (the manual calls them "wheel lifts") cannot be used because "internal damage to the transmission or transfer case will occur". So this means you do have to flat tow an '06 Wrangler, and I'll go ahead and recommend the most cost-effective set up for you to mitigate the expense as much as possible.

- Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1120

- etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Blue Ox Base Plates # e47ZR

- Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267

- Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-88400

- Brake Buddy Classic 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39494

- BrakeBuddy Towed Vehicle Battery Charge Kit # BB54FR

The Blue Ox base plates are the best value for your '06 Wrangler to give you the connection point for the SD tow bar, which is a similarly good value. It doesn't lack for quality and is easy to use, but also has integrated safety cables and an adjustable tilting head so a high-low adapter won't be needed. Having these come with the tow bar means you won't have to purchase them separately, saving you additional expenses.

The wiring kit will prevent any type of electrical feedback, keeping your Jeep's electrical system safe, the Brake-Lite Relay is needed to keep your Jeep's brake signal from overriding your motorhome's turn signal, and the battery charge kit will ensure your Jeep's battery stays charged as it is being towed.

As for the Brake Buddy, it is the most cost-effective supplemental braking system for flat towing. It is also a portable system so that means you'll be able to use it in other vehicles down the line if needed so you wouldn't have to go through the expense of getting another braking system at that point.
