Replacement Flex Air Pin Box for a 5th Wheel with a 1621 Pin Box
Question:
We are looking at upgrading our kingpin. Our current is the 1621 but it only has a weight rating of 15k and we will be double towing a boat behind the 5th wheel. We like the curt with the airbag to make a smoother ride and increase the pin weight for the boat. Our pickup is a 22 f350 short bed. I’ve been hearing there are issues with the bed being hit. Are we looking into the correct kingpin box? What would you recommend? Thanks

The Curt Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box # LC369535 would be the correct Flex Air to replace your current 1621 pin box. This pin box will reduce chucking, absorb road shock, and minimizes bounce. The internal air bag and built-in strut work with the rubberized pivoting head to achieve a smoother ride.
The Curt Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box # LC369535 has a 3" difference from king pin to front bolt row when compared to a standard 1621 pin box so it will be that much closer to your tailgate and sides. This will slightly help with turning clearance and the height difference can be adjusted if your 5th wheel hitch has an adjustable hitch head. I recommend hooking up to your trailer and measuring the distances you currently have to see if you can accommodate losing 3".
I would also caution you to verify with your 5th wheel manufacturer that your 5th wheel is able to handle triple towing (pulling a boat behind your 5th wheel). I also recommend verifying that triple towing is legal everywhere you will be traveling, as it is illegal in most states.
