Trailer Brake Controller is Not Working on a 2005 Toyota Tundra

I have a 2005 Tundra when I hook up my trailer all lights work but brake controller don't. What is the problem? I think the controller is bad. Thank you.

If your 2005 Toyota Tundra came with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector then you should be using the pig tail # 3040-P for a Tekonsha brake controller like the Prodigy that you have referenced. The key is that the additional white ground wire must be attached to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface because the Toyota ground is not sufficient.

If everything is hooked up correctly then check the owners manual for the locations of fuses and relays related to the tow package wiring. Find the one for power to the brake controller and make sure it is good.

If everything checks out, then use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the black wire on the controller. There should be a constant 12 volts on the black wire. If there is not, then no power is getting to the controller and would indicate a wiring issue on the truck.

If 12 volts is getting through and the brake controller does not light up or do anything then there is probably something wrong with the display and the controller will need to be replaced.

If the controller is lighting up but the trailer brakes are not working then there are several issues that can cause that problem. You would need to sever the blue wire a few inches back from the controller then use the circuit tester to test the end coming out of the controller. There should be power only when you apply the manual override. If there is no power then there is something wrong inside the controller and it needs to be replaced.

If there is power on the blue wire, reattach it. Then have someone sit in the truck and apply the manual override while you test the trailer connector at the back of the truck. Test the pin in the 5:00 position. If there is no power then there is a break in the wiring somewhere between the connector and the brake controller you will need to track down.

Make sure the truck and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. Inspect the trailer wiring and make sure that the power wires to the brake magnets are intact, not broken and touching the metal frame. Make sure the ground wires are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.
