Installing a Brake Controller on 2005 Toyota Tundra

Question:

I cannot locate my factory installed controller connector on my 2005 Toyota Tundra dual cab. Ive looked behind the glove box, up under the dash above the brake pedal and behind the driver-side kick panel. Nothing looks like what the factory book shows. Can you help?

The factory installed brake controller connector should be a white plug located on the left side under the drivers side dash on your 2005 Toyota Tundra Dual Cab. I have included a photo and a video that shows the location of the plug on another Toyota Tundra at the 8 second mark. This plug may not be there if your vehicle did not come with the factory tow package.

The Multi-Plug, # 20137, is designed as a replacement if your vehicle came with a factory tow package that included the harness from the factory and a 7-way trailer connector.

To add a 7-Way to a truck that did not have the factory tow package, you would first need to install a 4-Way, # C59496. I have included a link to the installation details for you to view. After you install the 4-Way, you will then need to use # ETBC7 to add a 7-Way trailer connector. The ETBC7 includes all the wiring you will need to install a brake controller. I have included a video of the ETBC7 being installed on a 2009 Toyota Tacoma, the vehicle is different, but the installation process is the same.

If you want to add a brake controller to use with trailers that have electric brakes, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up and easy to use. I have included installation details for it as well.
