What Causes 5th Wheel Trailers to Sway

Question:

Thinking of putting a large cargo rack on back of 33foot 5th wheel. 2 questions. First, how susceptible are 5th wheels to sway? Second, is it weight far back, in and of itself, that can cause sway or would any sway just be due to the potential effect on making the pin weight too light?

Expert Reply:

The main cause of sway has to do with weight distribution and not enough weight over the tongue. That said, so long as you stay within the manufactures load carrying capacity and distribute your cargo accordingly you should not have too many issues. There are also devices you can install on the trailer to prevent sway like the Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control part # 335TSC-1000 which is what I highly recommend. This device will apply the trailer brakes to prevent sway from happening and it's easy to install and setup.
