How to Wire Trailer Reverse Lamps On Trailer With 4 Pole Trailer Connector
Question:
I just bought a new USCargo trailer that appears to have reverse lights installed, however the wiring is only 4 pin. I was told that I could use a 7 pin adapter to my truck 2014 F150 to get power for the reverse lights. Are you aware if this is capable?

The easiest way to get the reverse lamps to function on your trailer without rewiring the vehicle would be to replace the existing 4 pole with a 7-way trailer connector. The fifth pin on the # HM47890 you'd looked at could be used, but you'd need to rewire both the vehicle AND the trailer. I have an easier suggestion....
We offer a 7-way connector/junction box as part # HS381-9000 that would be perfect for this sort of installation, as the junction box provides a good spot to neatly make your wiring connections so they're secure and protected from the elements.
The terminals in the junction box are color coded. The yellow terminal carries the reverse lamp circuit, you'll attach the power wire for the reverse lamps to that terminal.
You'll also want to make sure the 7-way on your vehicle is tied into the reverse lamp circuit. You can test that by using a # PTW2993 circuit tester on the center pin of the 7-way. That pin should show voltage when the transmission is placed in reverse.
