The lever on the side of the Hayes # HA81742B Energize III brake controller is what levels the internal pendulum for the accelerometer that determines how quickly the vehicle is braking. Once installed, the lever should be pointed downward, at a 90º angle to the floor of the vehicle.

This controller has a rudimentary display consisting of one LED, which isn't very user friendly. If you're pretty experienced using brake controllers, this might be a good choice for you but if you aren't, I'd recommend a controller with a more intuitive display that auto-levels and is easier to use like the Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN, part # TK63VR

The BRAKE-EVN controller will self-level, and the accelerometer that senses how quickly the tow vehicle is braking is solid state, versus an actual pendulum like what's used in the Energize III controller, so it'll be more reliable over time. The BRAKE-EVN provides a LED digital display that shows the power output in volts, and will display any applicable error codes should problems occur. All in all, it's much easier to use and the price differential is about what you'd pay for lunch at a fast food restaurant.

Depending on the year, make and model vehicle you're installing it in, there might be a vehicle specific wiring harness available. I'd be happy to recommend one if you provide that info about your vehicle.

If your vehicle is NOT prewired to install a brake controller, you'll need a universal pigtail to provide a quick disconnect. For the Hayes controller, that's part # HA81789-HBC or # 20127 for the Draw-Tite.

I've linked to a video that explains how the # 5535 brake controller works.
