Parts Needed to Increase Towing Performance on a 2013 Ford Explorer

Question:

I drive a 2013 Ford Explorer Limited with a V6 3.5L. I occasionally tow an open utility trailer ranging from 1000lbs-3000lbs. I am starting to get a check engine light whenever I tow now. It’s is just a fuel emissions code each time. Is there anything I can add to increase towing performance?

There are a few things that you can do to help out your 2013 Ford Explorer for when you are towing. You can add an air intake system, a tuner, and also an aftermarket transmission cooler to get the most out of your Explorer. I do recommend getting your check engine light taken care of though as that is something you don't want on, especially when towing.

The best intake system that we have is the Airaid MXP Cold Air Intake System # AR400-260 which feature an oiled filter for superior engine protection. Please note that this is not legal for use in California.

When it comes to a tuner the Superchips Dashpaq Performance Tuner # SU1060 is what you need. This plugs into your OBD-II port and comes with a suction cup mount so you can easily operate it. This not only lets you switch between power levels but it also allows you to monitor your driving habits.

A transmission cooler like the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit # D13503 helps to keep your engine cool and is a supplement to your OEM transmission. Simply mount this in one of the highlighted areas from the linked article and you should be able to tell that your engine isn't having to work as hard.

I have linked a helpful article for performance tuners as well.
