Difference Between The Roadmaster Crossbar And Direct-Connect Base Plates For A 2018 Jeep JL

Question:

Id like to outfit our 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport for flat towing. What is the difference between the 521453-4 base plate and the 521453-5? Also, does the lack of a cross bar on those cause greater stress on the frame of the Jeep? Thanks

The only difference between the Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit # RM-521453-4 and Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-521453-5 is the style of the arms. The crossbar style was the original, but Roadmaster has strengthened their products and moved on to the direct-connect style which does not require the use of an additional crossbar. They actually just stopped offering the crossbars with their tow bars last fall as well, since they're no longer needed. With the direct-connect style base plates you won't have to use the crossbar or worry about undue stress on the frame of your 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

To go with your direct-connect base plate I recommend the etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plates # e74ZR. This tow bar is specifically designed to fit Roadmaster direct-connect base plates. It features non-binding latches and telescoping, self supporting arms that make connecting and disconnecting your Jeep on any terrain a breeze. It has an adjustable head that tilts up or down 3" and the shank has a built-in 1-1/2" rise or drop to keep tow bar parallel with road while towing without the use of a high/low hitch adapter. It also comes with safety cables included.

You'll also need a tow bar wiring kit, for this I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit allows you to use your Jeep's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV.

For a supplemental braking system I recommend the Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39524. This system offers intense, emergency braking or steady, smooth braking in a single portable system. Easily switch between proportional or full braking from the cab of your motorhome using the remote. The included charge line kit will keep your Equinox's battery charged while you tow as well.

Since the # e74ZR already comes with safety cables you won't have to purchase these separately.
