When Using a Battery Isolator Prevent the Trailer Battery from Draining the Vehicle Battery

Question:

I was looking at some of your expert answers and found one that closely helps me. The one about trailer wiring, the 12v power wire to help maintained the trailer battery on a cargo/ATV enclosed trailer when hooked up. I have not setup the battery and wiring for interior lights yet. My question is: If I contact the 12v power wire to the positive side of battery, do I need an isolator to prevent overcharging or prevent back-feed or any other reason? Thanks for any help.

The isolator # PK5231201 will only send power back on the output wire when the ignition source is energized (vehicle is running). This will prevent the trailer from drawing power from the vehicle battery or back feeding to the vehicle battery and will also maintain the charge level of the battery (when the vehicle is running). However, you will not be able to charge up the trailer mounted battery. For that you are going to want to use a battery charger like # CTEK56353.

If you are just using the trailer connector to maintain the charge on the battery as long as the trailer is connected to the vehicle side connector it will draw power from the vehicle battery to the trailer battery. An isolator will prevent this.
