Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Wiring for Towing With 2013 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI

Question:

I was wondering if you could help me figure out what equipment that I would need to install on a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI 6spd. I will need the ability to tow a 5x8 Cargo mate, Blazer trailer, with trailer brakes equipped. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing I recommend is checking your owner's manual. Make sure your 2013 VW Jetta SportWagen is capable of towing this trailer. Assuming it is, you will want a hitch, wiring, brake controller, and ball mount for a complete towing setup.

For a hitch, I recommend the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7284. This hitch has a concealed cross tube and a 2" receiver. It also has a maximum gross trailer weight of 2,000 lbs. You will be limited by whichever towing capacity is lower, the hitch or your vehicle.

For 4-way wiring you want the Curt # C59236. Once you have installed the 4-way you will need to install the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. This comes with the adapter, wiring, and everything else you will need to install a 7-way.

For a brake controller, check out the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR. You will also need the # RED69FR wiring harness for installation. This brake controller mounts in an out of the way location leaving only the control knob visible in your vehicle. The control knob allows you to adjust the braking power and also acts as a manual override.

For a ball mount, I like the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. This kit has two ball mounts, one with a 3/4" rise or 2" drop and the other with a 2-3/4" rise or 4" drop. It also comes with a 1-7/8" and 2" ball, as well as a ball mount bag to store everything in.

I have attached some installation videos for your reference.
