Does Wind Fairing Help Ski Rack Stop Whistling so Much

Question:

I am having a HUGE problem with our ski racks making crazy noise/whistling on our car. We have almost 0 noise with just the roof racks installed but once the ski rack is installed its bad. I was wondering if a wind fairing will still help even though the ski racks will sit above the fairing. If not any other ideas? Thanks

A wind fairing really won't help to stop the noise coming from a ski rack, as it won't direct the air flow over the rack. The whistling is likely mostly coming from between the bars where it clamps onto your skis, but also on the top of the ski rack.

While any accessory on top of your roof is going to make some noise, if you really cannot live how bad the whistling is (like on longer trips), then the only other thing I can think of would be to stop using the ski rack and instead put your skis in a rooftop cargo box. This is admittedly a pricier option than a fairing, but I wanted to at least mention it for you to consider. The best option for a quieter rooftop cargo box that holds skis is going to be a low-profile box from Thule:

- Thule Pulse Alpine Rooftop Cargo Box # TH613

The Pulse Alpine # TH613 is only 12-1/2 inches tall for the best airflow, and can carry 4-6 pairs of skis that are up to 210 cm long. It comes with a lock, weighs only 30 lbs so it's easy to use, and simply clamps around your crossbars.

If you do decide this is something you'd like to do, just keep in mind it will fit crossbar spreads between 23-5/8" and 35-3/4". It's likely your crossbars have a spread in that range, but you'll want to check to be sure.
