Will Swagman Original 4 Bike Rack Fit 2005 Chevy Tahoe While Towing 2005 Rockwood Premium Camper

Question:

I have a 2005 Tahoe and towing a 2005 Rockwood Premier Camper with A/C unit on roof of camper. I am looking for a bike rack that will also tow with the camper. I would like to get a bike rack that will allow the bikes to mount to the hitch of the truck and then tow the camper, so the bikes would be between the truck and camper. I was looking into the Swagman 4 bike carrier would like a 4 bike carrier model S64675 but as I am reading Im not sure the weight is enough and turning corners. Can I get some suggestions on what would work best for my situation. Thanks for your help.

The solution for the ability to use the Swagman Original 4 Bike Rack # S64675 on your 2005 Chevy Tahoe, and tow your 2005 Rockwood Premium Camper is going to come in the form of a new ball mount.

The Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount # D210, can tow a trailer and carry an accessory, such as a bike rack simultaneously, however, this application will depend upon the towing capacity of your vehicle and weight of your trailer. I have attached a short video describing the # D210.

To determine if this will work, you are going to have a few calculations to verify and measure, but, it should not take too much time.

You first need to check your Tahoe owners manual to confirm is rated towing capacity. If your 2005 Chevy Tahoe has enough extra capacity while pulling your 2005 Rockwood Premium Camper, then the next step is the calculations.

Next, confirm the weight of your camper, because the # D210 has a 7,500 lb capacity. I checked the specs on various models in the Rockwood Premier Series and the dry weights vary from 1730-lbs for the M-1907 up to 2605-lbs for the M-2514G. Based on this information, the Curt # D210 multipurpose ball should have enough capacity to tow your camper.

I have attached a picture of the # D210 with all of the measurements indicated. Using these measurements, verify that your ball and trailer coupler will fit in the given space without interference with the bike rack.

The last measurement you will have to consider is the amount of distance you have between the bike rack and the camper. I have attached a picture of the Swagman # S64675 bike rack with the dimensions indicated. You will need to check the space you have between your Tahoe and Rockwood Camper to determine if the carrier will fit.

An additional note of consideration is when carrying bikes on a hanging bike rack, if you are planning on carrying either womens, childrens or alternative frame bike, you may want to check out the Swagman adapter bar # 64005. By using this adapter, it will carry your bikes level and provide good ground clearance that you will need.

With regards to turning - when you are carrying a bike rack in between a truck and trailer, tight turns may cause inadvertent contact between the bike rack and trailer. As instructed, when you load the bike rack, you load the largest bike closest to the hitch and smaller thereafter - with that factor, you may get lucky, being that your childrens bikes would be the closes to the trailer and are probably smaller than your adult bikes.
