Parts Needed to Install Trailer Brake Controller on a 2003 Nissan Frontier with Factory Tow Package
Question:
I have a 2003 Nissan Frontier 4WD 4 door super charged 3.3 with the 4 pin and 7 pin trailer hookups already factory installed. Is there a wiring plug under the dash ready to be used for an electric brake hookup? If there is, what does it look like and where is it located? Do I need to order a special plug adaptor to hook the electric brake controller to it? Is there a video on the installation of this for my vehicle? What controller do you recommend? I plan on pulling a 3000 pound popup tent trailer.

A brake controller wiring harness is not available for the 2003 Nissan Frontier. However you can check for a factory tow package wiring under the dash, to the left of the steering column, near the emergency brake pedal. If the harness is there then you can use it to hardwire in the controller.
If the factory wiring is present and labeled then you will connect it by function: controller white is ground, black is 12-volt power, blue is output to the trailer brakes, and red is input from the brake switch. If the wiring is not labeled, you will need to test it with a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to determine the wiring functions.
If you cannot locate the harness, then you will need to bypass the factory wiring use a kit like # 5506. With this kit you would attach the brake controller white wire to the negative battery terminal, black to the positive battery terminal via the included circuit breaker, red would go to the cold side of the brake switch, and blue would go back to the trailer connector and connect in the 7:00 position at the back of the 7-Way. The wire that is already there would have to be removed.
The cold side of the brake switch can be found using the circuit tester. Probe the wires of the brake switch located above the brake pedal until you find the one that only shows power with the brake pedal and not with the turn signals or headlights on. I have included a couple of links that should help with this installation.
I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is a very reliable controller and it is easy to set up and easy to use.
