How Do You Adjust Lippert Self-Adjusting Braking Assemblies When They Are Too Tight

Question:

12-5-2021 Conner L: 1. In what you attached from Lippert [to Dan K] it reads Note: A second screwdriver will be needed to push the auto adjusting lever away from the starwheel so that the starwheel can be rotated backwards. 2. There is nothing indicated on the image about this lever and you and Lippert say nothing of this I have the Lippert full document. 3. Please give some details of the same and another image to show the auto adjusting lever. 4. My issue is loosening the brakes for adjustment. Regards,

Adjusting self-adjusting brakes is going to be a lot more difficult than manual adjusting ones due to the starwheel and how the self adjusting cable is attached. The procedure listed in Connor's answer is what has been relayed to us by Lippert as we do not carry their line of brakes, so unfortunately, those are the only pictures we have of them.

However, I provided a picture of a Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brake kit # 23-464-465 and the lever in question as an example. This should help explain things a little better. Basically, this lever will be attached to the cable that is pulled when the brakes are engaged. This causes the lever to pivot upwards at a certain point and turn the starwheel when needed. As this has constant tension on the starwheel, it does need to be lifted off the starwheel in order to adjust the brakes.
