Recommended Axle and Suspension Upgrade for Converting Pop-Up Camper to Stand-Up Tear Camper
Question:
Id like some help ing new suspension, axel, and tires/rims for a trailer. I have pop-up camper frame that I plan on converting to a mini standup tear camper. Id like to put a heaver suspension on the trailer with a new axel and larger tires. It currently has slipper springs. I have pictures with dimensions of the springs and current spring mounts. Is there someplace I can send the pictures with dimensions to to get some advice?

In order to put a heavier suspension on your trailer you will need an axle, leaf springs, hangers, spring seats (if you need to move them), suspension bolts, U-bolts/U-bolt plates, and shackle straps (if you want a double-eye leaf spring). You will need to start with the axle, which will require the hub face to hub face dimensions of your current axle. While the spring seat to spring seat measurement can be helpful, it is possible to remove the spring seats and weld on new ones if necessary.
It would also be helpful to know your current axle capacity. Try looking at your axle tag to see if it lists the capacity. If it is not, you can also find the diameter of the axle to find the typical corresponding axle capacity. More than likely you have a 2,000 lb axle which is 1-1/2" - 1-3/4" in diameter, but it is possible you have a 3,500 lb axle with a 2-3/8" diameter as well. If you send me this information, along with the pictures, it will be a good starting point to find the correct parts assuming there is an axle that matches your current axle length.
If you would like to skip all of that, the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension like the # ASR35HDS01 would be a great choice. This system fits any any frame width and can be bolted or welded on for installation. The units work independently to deliver a smooth, stable ride. It has a 3,500 lb capacity and works with 5,200 lb, 6,000 lb, or 7,000 lb hub and drum assemblies which will allow for the larger wheels and tires. If you would prefer an option with a lift, # ASR35HDS02 is also available with a 4" lift.
This system would work well with Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 5,200-lb and 6,000-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 12" - 6 on 5-1/2 # 8-201-9UC3-EZ. You would also want the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Assembly # 23-464 for the left hand and # 23-465 for the right hand.
If you don't want brakes, you would only need hubs like the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-655-6-EZ-K. For a wheel and tire combination that will fit the bolt pattern of this hub and complete the setup, I recommend the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Tire w 16" Jaguar Aluminum Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - LR E - Silver # LHAWSJ511S.
I have attached some review and installation videos for the products mentioned above that you can check out. I have also included a link to all of our wheels and tires with a 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, along with some helpful articles on trailer suspension for your reference.
