Procedure for Installing Reese 58098 Replacement Trunnion and Roll Pin
Question:
I ordered replacement trunnions for my 800 pound bar. There are no instructions included with the part. My best guess looking at the bar and replacements is the procedure is as follows: 1 Knock out the pins securing the old trunnion to the bar with a hammer and punch. 2 Slide the old trunnion off the bar. Note orientation of the trunnion on the bar. 3 Slide new trunnion onto bar so it is oriented the same way as the old trunnion. Make sure the hole is aligned. 4 Hammer the new pin into the hole to secure the new trunnion on the bar. Please confirm the above procedure or make changes where necessary. Also, does friction hold the pin securing the trunnion to the bar in such a way that it cannot fall out during travel or is there something I have to do to the pin after it is installed?

The procedure you described is exactly correct. That is exactly how the # 58098 trunnions are replaced.
You'll use a punch to drive out the roll pin holding the old trunnion on the spring bar, then remove the trunnion from the bar. Then, slide the replacement trunnion on the bar, making sure the holes for the roll pins line up. Then drive the new roll pins into place.
The roll pins are made of spring steel, so they will be a compression fit, you won't need to add anything to hold them into place.
