Installing Redarc RED69FR Tow-Pro Liberty on 2017 Subaru Outback

Question:

Hi, I would like to install a brake trailer controller on my 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R and Ive seen people tapping the brake cold wire in the front and others in the back where the 4PIN connector is. Is a there an option that is better than the other? And do you have a wiring diagram with the colour fo the cold wire for the front and also for the back? Thank You

I don't have a wiring diagram specific for your vehicle, but I can certainly explain the process for you.

The cold side brake stop lamp switch wire at the front of the vehicle is located above the top of the brake pedal assembly and is rather difficult to reach. The proper wire is brown and white striped, but we highly recommend testing the wire's function using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 as wire colors used in assembling a vehicle aren't always consistent. You're looking for the wire that only shows voltage when the brake pedal is pressed.

If you can't reach the brake stop lamp switch, you can access the signal at the rear of the vehicle, but the procedure will depend on how your vehicle is equipped.

If your Outback has an OEM 4 pole trailer connector, I don't know the wire color you'll be looking for. The 3rd brake lamp would be the easiest place to find a 'clean' brake lamp signal, so that's where I'd recommend tapping in.

If you are using an aftermarket 4 pole connector like part # 118467, you'd tap into the red wire that extends from the tow package plug to the converter box.

In addition to the Redarc # RED24FR Tow-Pro Liberty you'll also need the # ETBC7 wiring kit and the # RED69FR wiring pigtail.
