Is A Gooseneck Conversion Worth It?

Question:

So I have a fifth wheel camper with a Demco 18K autoslider in my F350 Superduty. Is there an advantage to using changing camper to a gooseneck? the truck has it already to use? Also, the auto slide clears back tailgate. thanks

I think that the Gooseneck conversion would give you slightly more maneuverability when dealing with uneven surfaces when hooking and unhooking and it has fewer parts that might need to be replaced eventually. You will also have a "free" or "clean" bed when not in use. You wont have to remove a bulky 5th wheel auto-slide hitch.

You will loose some cab clearance if you replace your slider and may not be able to make some of the sharper turns.

I would recommend The Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY58GR is a great low maintenance conversion. It reduces chucking and the rough "front to back" motion and reduces the up and down jarring. It has no air bags to maintain and fewer moving parts to repair/replace. It is self latching and has an attached cable to let you unlatch without having to climb into the bed of your truck.

The Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter # RP85FR is not a bad option either but it does have more moving parts that will require more maintenance and possible replacement one day. As with all mechanical devices though proper preventative care will keep all parts lasting a long time and up to your standards.

For both of these options you will need to verify the pin box model on your camper and make sure it is a confirmed fit, these options are both pin box specific replacement parts.

The Reese Goose Box is Designed to replace Lippert 1621, 1621HD, and 0719 pin boxes. Lippert pin box 1716 will work with this goosebox, but a spacer kit # RP61301 (sold separately) is required.

The Gen Y is Designed to replace Lippert 1621 and 1621 HD 5th-wheel pin boxes
