Why are Some Bike Racks Recommended for 5th-Wheel Trailers but Not Travel Trailers?

Question:

Our travel trailer came with a 2inch hitch receiver installed on the bumper, and I assume it was used for a rack of some type. I am seeing bike racks indicated for 5th wheel trailers, but specifically NOT travel trailers. What is the difference that these racks are not recommended for travel trailers?

The reason why we differentiate between bike racks that are designed for travel trailers and 5th-wheel trailers is because travel trailers have to account for the additional length of the direct hitch connection from the trailer to the vehicle. This adds more total length to travel trailers and causes more torque/force to be exerted on the back of the trailer. I went ahead and attached a diagram that shows how a hitch receiver mount adds more length.

If you need a recommendation of a bike rack that is compatible with a 2-inch hitch on your travel trailer, I recommend the Swagman Dispatch Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches # S44FR. The Dispatch comes with a 45 pound per-bike weight capacity and will be able to withstand the force/torque on the back of your trailer. If you have children's bikes or bikes with women's style frames, alternative frames, or step-thru frames, I recommend the Swagman Bike Frame Adapter Bar # 64005. The bike frame adapter bar will give your frame a straight horizontal plane that is required to mount your bikes to the frame-mount attachments on the Dispatch.
