Solution For Raising Older Trailer Than Drags On The Ground

Question:

This trailer is so low it drags on steep driveways. Experts have told me that its not possible, because of the way the suspension is made coupled with the trailers age that raising it isnt going to be feasible. I improved it some by getting a hitch with an 11inch , but now it drags both at the rear bumper and at the hitch. Yikes! Theres not much room, so the rollers would have to be very small ..like 2. Then I think I need a roller on the hitch too. We got the trailer for fire season, and Im having to store it off premises because we risk damaging it every time we take it out. Im at my wits end with this and Id very much appreciate your thoughts.

If the trailer has leaf springs under the axles, then you can install an over/under conversion kit to raise the trailer up a few inches. For 2-3/8" axle go with Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 and for 3" axles go with Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00. If the suspension is already over the axles then your other option is to install Lippert Components Standard Axle Lift Kit - 1.88" # LC425750 which adds 1.88" of ground clearance.

If you actually have torsion axles then you will need to let me know what kind you have and send in a photo if possible so that I can verify if there is a way to lift your trailer.

In regard to the skid wheels, such as Ultra-Fab Rotating Hitch Mounted Skid Wheels for RVs up to 30' Long - 4" Diameter # UF48-979014, this may work but I would go with a smaller wheel as a large wheel may actually cause more stress on the trailer and hitch. The smallest diameter wheel available is Ultra-Fab Steel Mini-Roller for Trailers and RVs - Weld On - 1-1/2" Wide x 2-1/2" Tall # UF48-979022 which needs to be welded on and it measures 2-1/2" tall. If you don't want to weld on the receiver then you culd use these 2-1/2" wheels on the rear of the trailer then use Ultra-Fab Steel Roller for RVs with 2" Trailer Hitches # UF48-979020 on the receiver as long as it is 2".
