Recommended Load Range for Trailer Tires Towing Subaru Outback on 16 Foot Aluminum Car Trailer

Question:

Hi, I have a 16 ft aluminum car trailer. I tow a Subaru Outback on it. I have been told I need to upgrade my tires to load range d. What should I be looking for in a tire for this trailer? I tow it on the highway behind a c class RV. Thanks

In order to determine if you need to upgrade your tires to a different load range with a higher capacity some additional information would be necessary.

First, I would need to know what size tire you have. The load range capacities are different depending on the size of the tire. In addition to this, it is necessary to know the weight of your trailer and vehicle. The only reason you would need to upgrade your tire is if you are exceeding the capacity of your current tires.

I will use the Provider # TR20514 you looked at as an example. This 205/75-14 tire has a load range of C, which means a maximum load of 1,760 lbs at 50 psi. This is going to be the capacity per tire so if you have four tires it will be 7,040 lbs which is likely well over the weight of your trailer and vehicle. If this is the case there would be no reason to get a different tire.

I have attached a helpful article on tire size that lists the load range for each size and the maximum capacity for each load range for your reference.
