Parts Needed To Give A Dexter 3,500LB Idler Axle Electric Drum Brakes

Question:

I have a trailer with a Dexter 3,500lb axle that does not have any brakes on it now. Can I use this brake backing plate pair to add brakes to my trailer? Could I use Dexter 84556UC3 hub and drum assembly? Thank you.

You can use the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-468-469 as long as your Dexter Axle does have the Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35, otherwise you will need to have those welded on. These brakes are great as once you have them initially set you will not have to adjust them periodically. They will automatically adjust which improves braking quality and life.

The Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 84556UC3 does use the common Bearings # L44649 and # L68149 that come on a Dexter 3,500lb axle. You will want to verify that your axle does use the same bearings and Grease Seal # 58846 to ensure correct fit. This hub also uses a 5 lug on 5" mounting pattern that you will need to confirm fits your wheels that you intend to use. Be aware that the brake kit requires a 14" wheel. The easiest way I find to get this measurement is with measuring two lug nuts that are next to each other as when mounted the hub is in the way.

If the distance is:
2-5/8" - bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2
2-3/4" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4
3" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5
3-1/4" - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2

If you find that you need a different lug pattern or have different bearings please let me know what you have so that I can help you get the correct parts.

If your trailer does not already have a 7-way connection and breakaway battery you will need the Junction Box # 3430001-JBK, 7-Way # HM20087 and a Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 3802308. To this you will also need some 12 Gauge Wire # 12-1-1, Butt Connectors # DW05745-1 and Ring Terminals # DW05740-1 to connect to all the brake assemblies.
