Best Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier for a Dodge Sprinter 250

Question:

I would like a platform at the rear of my Sprinter van. I would like to be able to use it to carry cargo while on the road I would also like to be able to use it as a platform to stand on with the doors open to shower while camping. Is there a carrier for me?

Platform-style hitch-mount cargo carriers such as those shown on the link provided come in a variety of sizes. Some can be folded up when not in use and some include ramps to facilitate loading. These typically have a steel mesh decking material and are available with weight capacities ranging from 300 to 600 lbs.

However, these are designed for cargo loads, where the total weight is distributed across a large part of the carrier surface area. They are not intended to support a person, where the weight of the individual is concentrated into a small area (the area of two footprints).

Also, these platform cargo carriers require the presence of a rear hitch receiver in order to mount to a vehicle, and since I do not know the model year of your Dodge Sprinter, nor which particular version you have, I have provided a link to our product page for trailer hitch receivers for model year 2009, just as an example. This is the latest model year for the Sprinter for which we show a fit for trailer hitch receivers. You can use the drop down menu at the top of the page to Select Vehicle Style and review the hitch receivers that will fit your particular Sprinter. Or simply let me know the model year and version and I can show you available hitches for your vehicle.

Our example of the 2009 Sprinter calls for a 2-inch hitch receiver. In this case you will want to consider cargo carriers that are intended for this size hitch. I have included a third link that will show you only the cargo carriers intended for this 2-inch hitch receiver. One example of a popular fixed (non-folding) carrier is the ProSeries # 63153, which measures 24 x 60 inches and offers a 500-lb capacity and 10 square feet of storage area.
